Getting Life Insurance as a Hard Illegal Drug User

Drug use is still a prevalent issue in our society and its a reality underwriters are prepared for. Getting life insurance is harder for those who have used drugs, but it's not impossible.

According to the most recent data (2009) from the Canadian Alcohol and Drug Use Monitoring Survey, cocaine and crack were the most prevalent drugs used by those 15 years or older in that year after cannabis. Though only 1.2% of Canadians actually partook, compared to the 10.6% that used marijuana, an average of 11% of Canadians have used one of six illicit drugs in the past year, including cannabis, cocaine or crack, speed, ecstasy, hallucinogens (excluding salvia) or heroin. The rate of drug use among women (7.6%) was almost double that number among men (14.7%) and three times higher among youth (27.3%)

Illicit drug use has been on the decline in Canada since 2004, creating a lot of former users and addicts who may find themselves looking for life insurance one day.

As you can probably guess, Life insurance companies do not treat cocaine use or other harsh recreational drug use very favorably. In almost all instances, current cocaine use, or other forms of recreational drugs, such as ecstasy or heroine will result in an automatic decline. It should be noted however that current drug users may be able to qualify for Simplified Issue policies. These policies have no medical tests and often do not have a drug related question.

You can get more details on simplified issue coverage by visited our Non-Medical Life Insurance Quote Page.

We surveyed four insurance companies on how their underwriting guidelines view cocaine, heroine and ecstasy and here is what we found:

How to Get Life Insurance After a Stroke

A Stroke doesn't necessarily
exclude you from life insurance.

You can still get life insurance after suffering a stroke, but you have to be very careful in how you go about applying, keeping certain things in mind.

Traditional life insurance policies may or may not be available depending on the severity of the stroke. Insurers will need specific information about the applicant's medical history including the type of stroke, the insured's age at the time of the stroke and any permanent damage resulting from the stroke, such as impaired speech and any medications taken to treat it.

Any history of pre-existing conditions that the insured may have, like diabetes or cholesterol, can also impact a person's insurability. When a stroke is combined with a negative medical history, the applicant is much less likely to qualify for traditional insurance.

We like to offer complex financial help to our clients, not only guaranteed issue life insurance. And we encountered number of clients bothered with their car leasing. Leasing a car may be a sensible option if you are planning to purchase a car. Lease payments are usually smaller than the payments for a consumer loan. You may therefore be able to afford to lease a car which you don’t care to legally own right now. Maintenance of a leased car may become cheaper too, since you normally return your car back before it suffers major breakdowns. Leasing for a predetermined time span is effectively a cheap way to a long-term car rental. The financial obligations stemming from a lease agreement, however, may prove troublesome on occasion, especially when the economy is shaky.

In answer to the title, the short answer is, "no." The long answer is, it may cost you more money than buying life insurance through traditional channels.

There are four reasons for this.

1. Some websites only offer their own in house plans. This can result in paying a significant premium above those offered by independent brokers. Independent brokers work with a variety of companies and can shop for the best possible solution at the best possible price.

2. By not getting a thorough understanding and analysis of the plan you're buying, you may purchase the wrong plan. This could cost you and your family thousands of dollars.

More and more people are surviving cancer every day and it's having a tremendous impact on the way life insurance companies underwrite those who survive cancer. Many forms of cancer are very treatable in their early stages and insurance companies have adjusted their pricing to reflect this.

In certain cases, cancer survivors can now even qualify for traditional life insurance. Your best chance is in working with a broker who has experience with higher risk applicants. Remember, the claims experience and underwriting practices can vary sharply from one insurance company to another. Be careful because the wrong broker could cost you thousands of dollars.
